Understanding prevention, screening, and treatment

Many people seeking treatment for heavy drinking and alcohol use disorder may not always visit practitioners who specialize in alcohol misuse prevention, identification, or treatment. Fortunately, clinically useful and validated tools are widely studied and available for other practitioners who often deal with these topics. In this article, researchers review the scientific literature for developments among prevention, screening, and treatment programs for heavy drinking and alcohol use disorders. The review also discusses different effects from different levels of drinking or other factors like co-occurring disorders, as well as treatment, various technologies, population-level interventions, and areas for future research. The paper “Prevention, screening, and treatment for heavy drinking and alcohol use disorder” was funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the National Institute on Drug Abuse. It was published in The Lancet Psychiatry.
