Understanding psychiatric comorbidities with alcohol use disorder

Preventing or treating alcohol use disorders is often complicated by the presence of other conditions, including co-occurring mental and substance use disorders. In this paper, researchers collected, reviewed, and summarized the larger body of research on comorbidities from the substance use prevention research field. The article is divided into sections on different mental health disorders and their connection with alcohol use disorder. Researchers discuss the prevalence of comorbidity, what is known about the relationship, clinical presentation, and the implications for prevention and treatment. The article “Psychiatric comorbidities in alcohol use disorder” was funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the National Institute on Drug Abuse. It was published in The Lancet Psychiatry.
