Activity Description:

Alcorn Communities Talk (ACT) to Prevent Underage Drinking is being hosted by the ASU-SPARK program, a Campus Suicide Prevention program funded by SAMHSA. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMSHA) is an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads public health efforts to advance behavioral health of the nation. SAMHSA's mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America's communities. The program is being jointly hosted by the Youth Leadership Academy where 50 students in the age range of 15-18 from the local Port Gibson High School will be in attendance. The Youth Leadership Academy is a summer program for the local youth organized by the Alcorn Extension Program. The Leadership Academy will be a befitting program to engage youth in discussions on alcohol prevention as the purpose of the Academy is to help youth develop leadership and communication skills that support responsible behavior. The event will be organized in a world cafe' format. This format will allow participants to engage in discussions on Underage drinking in a welcoming cafe' like setting. Panelists representing law enforcement, judiciary, student affairs, mental health and youth leadership will channel discussions and enlighten participants to take action. This is the second year a town hall meeting on Underage drinking is being hosted at Alcorn State University.
