Interactive Drunk Driving Town Hall for Parents
Hosted by:
Safe Streets Wichita Coalition
Please briefly describe your Communities Talk activity.
We held our Communities Talk event in collaboration with our community’s annual Backpack and Resources fair. During the fair, we played interactive games with our attendees (such as using impairment goggles) and shared resources on impaired driving. Because many parents in our area believe underage drinking is a rite of passage, we felt it was necessary to provide information on all aspects of underage drinking and alcohol misuse, especially during fall sports season and school events such as homecoming. With that said, we provided parents with handouts, brochures, and local resources for them to review later. While we were working with the adults, our youth coalition members were doing mental health self-care activities with the youth. We were able to provide this interactive Town Hall to 116 adults, and our youth coalition members interacted with 502 youth community members.
How does alcohol and other drug misuse affect your community?
In our community we notice that a lot of youth drink after sporting events and school dances, and during weekend parties. This alcohol is supplied in large part by adult friends or family. These youth are then trying to drive home under the influence.
