Resources and Opportunities for Participating in SAMHSA's National Prevention Week, May 14-20, 2017

05/11/2017

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) National Prevention Week (NPW) is next week! If you’re thinking about or already planning a Communities Talk event during NPW, check out the NPW Planning Toolkit for last minute event ideas and planning tips. Each day of NPW has a different theme, and the May 16 theme is the Prevention of Underage Drinking & Alcohol Misuse—the perfect opportunity to host a Communities Talk event.

If you’re not hosting a prevention event, you can still participate in NPW. Register to watch the live NPW kick-off event on Monday, May 15, at 11 a.m. EDT, to be part of the action. You can also share the NPW 2017 promotional video on social media, which showcases this year’s theme, “Making Each Day Count.” And don’t forget to use the hashtag #NPW2017 to join the national conversation on social media.

You can also participate in the #PreventionPower Challenge via social media. Learn more about the Challenge and see what others are doing.

Finally, SAMHSA is hosting a number of technical assistance webinars to help support organizations working on the front lines of prevention. You can watch the archived recordings of the first two NPW 2017 webinars, "How to Get Involved with National Prevention Week 2017" and "Suicide and Substance Use in Young People" now, and register for the upcoming 2017 webinars (see below for registration links). These webinars provide ideas for how states, grantees, and community-based organizations can promote prevention.

NPW is a great time to learn more about prevention and keep your organization involved in the national discussion around underage drinking prevention and alcohol misuse. Don’t miss your chance to gather additional resources and ideas for your next prevention event. Remember, you can still register and host a Communities Talk event in 2017.
