Understanding alcohol use disorder treatment quality in rural and urban areas

To effectively address alcohol use disorder (AUD) nationwide, researchers wanted to understand the quality of treatment provided in large rural, small rural or urban clinics. They studied national data for treatment of patients with AUD in the Veterans Health Administration. They compared the treatment they received to the national Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) quality standards. They found patients living in rural areas had a lower likelihood of receiving treatment that met this standard than patients in urban areas.

The article, “Geographic differences in receipt of addictions treatment in a national sample of patients with alcohol use disorders from the U.S. Veteran’s Health Administration,” was funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. It was published in the journal Substance Abuse.
