Indian Health Service (IHS)

The Indian Health Service (IHS)external link disclaimer is responsible for providing federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). IHS is the principal federal healthcare provider and health advocate for AI/AN, and its goal is to raise their health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides a comprehensive health service delivery system for approximately 2.2 million AI/AN who belong to 573 federally recognized tribes in 37 states. The IHS Division of Behavioral Health is responsible for the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program (ASAP). The goals of ASAP are to improve the quality of and access to care for AI/AN communities; to assist tribes in the planning, development, and implementation of culturally-informed programming; and to transition from direct service only to primary direct service support.
