2019 Communities Talk Planning Stipends and January NASPA Conference
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Prevention will sponsor the seventh round of Communities Talk: Town Hall Meetings to Prevent Underage Drinking in late January 2019. Organizations like yours have held these events every two years since 2006 and have been a partner with SAMHSA and the Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Prevention of Underage Drinking in lowering rates of underage and harmful drinking.
- 1,500 Communities Talk events were held across all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
- More than 300 colleges and universities served as the primary Communities Talk event host or collaborated with community-based organizations in hosting an event.
- Eighty eight percent of organizers collaborated with one or more organizations in planning and hosting their events.
This year, SAMHSA will offer a limited number of $750 planning stipends to help cover the costs of planning and holding an event. Check the Communities Talk website for more information and to register your event for a planning stipend after you receive your invitation.

Don’t miss the Communities Talk workshop, “Engaging Campuses and Communities as Partners to Address Underage Drinking: A Strategic Framework” from 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. on Friday, January 18, 2019. This workshop will examine how Communities Talk events create a collaborative environment for substance abuse prevention initiatives on college campuses. Presenters will share best practices and resources to host a results-oriented event, and the process for registering and requesting stipends will be highlighted.
