Don’t Forget To Register: College Drinking: Prevention Perspectives Webinar on May 25

05/18/2017

The role of institution of higher education professionals is vital to underage drinking prevention efforts.

According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 58 percent of full-time college students ages 18-22 drank alcohol in the past month. Furthermore, 37.9 percent of college students ages 18-22 reported binge drinking in the past month.

Join the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) on Thursday, May 25 from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. EST, for "College Drinking: Prevention Perspectives from the Field." The webinar will highlight an important new resource—the College Drinking: Prevention Perspectives video series—which showcases underage drinking prevention strategies on and around college campuses across the nation.
The first video in the series, "Lessons Learned at Frostburg State University," explores actions taken to reduce underage and harmful drinking in the campus community, and offers educators, parents of college-age youth, and prevention organizations insights into what local prevention efforts worked at Frostburg State University.

There’s still time to register for "College Drinking: Prevention Perspectives from the Field" webinar.

The webinar will feature:

  • An excerpt of "Lessons Learned at Frostburg State University;" and
  • A panel of experts in the prevention field will address:
    • Alcohol’s impact on the developing brain of young adults;
    • How to encourage dialogue among IHE professionals and community stakeholders around actionable strategies and tactics to prevent underage drinking; and
    • Partnerships and programs that can help reduce underage drinking.

Panelists

  • Vivian Faden, Ph.D., Senior Science Advisor, Office of the Director, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)
  • Marion Pierce, Public Health Analyst, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), SAMHSA
  • John Ruyak, Alcohol, Drug & Recovery Specialist, Oregon State University

The webinar will close with a Q&A session for webinar participants, and will provide information about additional resources for underage drinking prevention in college communities.
