Between 2002 and 2011, rates of past-month alcohol use, binge drinking, and heavy drinking by 12- to 20-year-olds have declined steadily.

However, far too many young people continue to use alcohol, with the risk of serious, sometimes lifelong consequences.

In 2011, the rate of current use among 12- to 20-year-olds was 25.1 percent. The rate of binge drinking was 15.8 percent, and the rate of heavy drinking was 4.4 percent.
